Why Unstyled Components Beat Pre-Designed Kits

This whole library exists because of an observation I could not shake while building client sites: the prettier the template kit, the more hours I spent deleting its opinions. The purple gradient, the rounded-everything, the font pairing someone chose for a demo in 2023. Every kit purchase came bundled with an unpaid job: un-designing it.

The rework tax nobody itemizes

A pre-designed section carries dozens of hardcoded values: colors on every heading, custom typography on every text block, painted backgrounds on every container. Swapping a kit's brand for yours means visiting those values widget by widget. On a five-page build I once counted the clicks; recoloring a single kit hero to client brand took forty-plus setting changes. Multiply by every section on every page and the finished look you paid for becomes the slowest part of the project.

A kit does not save you design time. It sells you someone's finished decisions and charges your hours to reverse them.

What inheritance changes

An unstyled component references Global Styles slots instead of values: primary color, text color, accent, the typography scale. Paste it into a site with a configured kit and it arrives already wearing the brand, because the brand lives in the kit and the component just asks for it. The comparison usually gets framed as a build-day question, but rebrands are where it turns brutal. When a client changes their accent color, an inherited site updates from Site Settings in one motion; every pasted section follows because none of them ever owned a color. Then components inherit the mess, which is genuinely useful: it makes kit problems visible early, and fixing the kit fixes every section at once. My kit cleanup routine before any big paste session: open Site Settings, confirm the four color slots actually hold the brand values instead of defaults someone never set, check that body and heading typography point at the intended faces, and delete the mystery custom colors that accumulate on every long-lived site. Fifteen minutes, once, and every component pasted afterward lands correctly. Skipping this step and then adjusting components individually is the exact rework tax this whole approach exists to avoid, just self-inflicted.

Do V4 components inherit the same way?

V4 styles flow through classes and variables rather than V3's Global Styles slots, and our V4 components ship referencing the preview kit's tokens so restyling stays one-place-first.
